Abnormal Pap Test

An abnormal pap test causes concern in most women.  Some test results indicate that a repeat Pap test should take place.  Other results indicate that other further testing should be done.  The Olson Center's Dysplasia Clinic specializes in this further testing and treatment when Pap test results are abnormal.  There you will receive personalized care and education from our specialty-trained staff lead by Dr. Sonja Kinney and assisted by Sara Nollette, APRN and Gwen Washington, MA.  They meet with each patient, evaluate, test and follow-up with results personally and confidentially.

So what is an abnormal pap smear?  The Pap test is a way to find cell changes on the cervix.  If a Pap test shows these changes, the result will be called abnormal.  In some cases, these abnormal cells over time may lead to cancer.  You may need treatment.  In most cases, the treatment will be performed in your doctor's office.  If you are concerned about abnormal Pap test results, talk to your doctor.  Keep in mind that most problems that cause abnormal Pap test results, when found early, can be treated successfully.

What is a colposcopy?  A colposcopy is a procedure to evaluate the cervix further.  Colposcopy lets your doctor look at the cervix through a special device similar to a microscope.  Colposcopy is used to help diagnose SIL (squamous intraepithelial lesion) and precancerous cells.  For colposcopy, a speculum just like the one used during a Pap test is placed in the vagina so that the cervix can be viewed.
